300 patrons join Khmer Dance Troupe at Old Town School of Folk Music

On November 18th, 300 guests enjoyed classical and folk dance performances from our Khmer Cultural Dance Troupe at the Old Town School of Folk Music.  Part of the Old Town School's World Music Festival, Mateo Mulcahy, Community Projects Director for the school, noted that the Dance Troupe "provided a rare glimpse into the embattled music and dance traditions of Cambodia. The survival of these traditions is alive and well in the hands of the master musicians and dancers that came together for these  performances. The powerful artistry and precision of the performances enhanced by the beautiful traditional dress is a testament to the enduring cultural legacy of the Khmer people."

Dance Troupe members were joined by our master musicians, who offered a hands-on workshop for over 360 Chicago Public schoolchildren the morning after the performance.  For children and adults interested in learning the art of Khmer Dance and the beauty of Khmer music, free Sunday classes are offered at the Cambodian Association of Illinois.  Please call Anneth Houy, Cultural Arts Coordinator, at 773-878-7090 for more information.
